[原文] [Roland Frasier]: I want you to think about something that sounds completely backwards. The more valuable that you are to your business, the less valuable your business is to everyone else, to anybody, including you. I've bought and sold businesses for over 30 years, more than 100 transactions as a principal, thousands more as an advisor. And the single biggest factor that determines what a company is worth isn't the revenue, it isn't even the profit margin. It's one question: Can this business run without the person who built it? Most can't. And the founders who built them have no idea what that is costing them. Today, I'm going to walk you through exactly how to fix that, not as a theory, but as a framework that I've refined across three decades and written about in my book, The Five Evolutions of an Entrepreneur.
[原文] [Roland Frasier]: By the end of this video, you're going to understand why getting off your org chart is the highest-return move that you can make. And you'll even have a clear picture of exactly where to start. So, first, let's talk about the wall. I remember the moment that I hit my own wall clearly. I was practicing law, and we started the firm. I had plenty of time, and the work was manageable. And then the practice grew, and the workload grew with it. And I had this habit of wanting to finish everything before the weekend started. I wanted a clean slate by the close of business on Friday.
[原文] [Roland Frasier]: Nothing backlogged, nothing to carry over into the next week. That worked for a while, actually for a good while. But then Friday started becoming Saturday, Saturday started becoming Sunday, and eventually even Sunday wasn't enough. My business partner had a name for it. He said that I believed in the myth of unlimited capacity. I pushed back. I said it wasn't a myth; I could handle it. I was willing to work super hard to prove it wrong, but I was ultimately wrong. So, there came a point when there was simply more work than I could get done. And it was more than any one person could do, right? Anybody. And it wasn't just me burning out; it was the whole practice that was straining because everything was running through me, and I was the bottleneck I'd built with my own ambition and, let's just say, arrogance.
[原文] [Roland Frasier]: Here's what I learned from that, though. Hard work scales chaos just as fast as it scales revenue. The harder that you push, the more the business depends upon you to keep pushing and to push yourself. And there's no such thing as unlimited capacity. It turns out my partner was right. It is a myth. And at some point, brute force stops producing results and starts producing burnout, missed details, and a business that can't function the minute that you step back from it. And most importantly, it produces a very unhappy you. That is not a growth strategy. It's not sustainable.
[原文] [Roland Frasier]: That's a trap. So, let's talk about why this matters in dollars. Here's what most founders underestimate, and that's what's actually at stake. When somebody buys a business, they generally apply a multiple to your profits to come up with its value. And that multiple isn't fixed. It moves. It moves based on one thing more than almost anything else: whether the business depends on the founder. We call it founder dependency. And I've seen this play out across hundreds of transactions on both sides of the table, as the buyer and the seller, and as an advisor to buyers and sellers.
