Before we get into it, Steven, could you just introduce yourself a little bit for the folks watching?

[原文] [Steven Chu]: Sure. Hi everyone, I'm Steven. I'm currently a deployed engineer at LangChain. Before I was at LangChain, I had a bit of an interesting background. I got my MBA at Stanford over the past two years. I was previously a software engineer at Google, and then had some stints in data science as well.

I wanted to first talk about how you see LangChain as different from other companies hiring deployed engineers. Then we can talk a little more specifically about the interviews at LangChain versus other types of companies.

[原文] [Steven Chu]: Sure. I think when I first started in this role, I had a lot of confusion around like what a deployed engineer was or forward deployed or sales engineer or solutions architect. And I think it means different things at different companies. I would say at LangChain specifically, since we have such like a wide breadth of products and and just an overall platform, I would say that we really focus on, you know, people who can absorb and like learn very quickly because they have to not only know our commercial product, but our open source, how to build agents, how to debug infrastructure. so it's a pretty it's a pretty wide breadth of skills that we look for. And and really, I would say maybe more so than other FDE roles, we really focus on kind of the customer-facing persona

Yeah, I think the it's a common theme honestly in a lot of FD roles, but I could imagine for a company like LangChain, which maybe we can just briefly chat about what it is for folks watching in case they don't know, particularly relevant like what how to communicate and communicate these stories.

[原文] [Steven Chu]: Sure, I can give a quick overview of LangChain and what we do. LangChain is a company where we're trying to build out an end-to-end agent platform. We're best known for our open-source agent development packages. You've probably heard of LangChain and LangGraph if your company has developed agents. Beyond that, we also have a commercial platform called LangSmith. It does everything from observing, evaluating, and monitoring your agents to providing managed infrastructure to deploy them. More recently, we've also released a no-code agent builder for less technical users.

[原文] [Speaker A]: At a company like LangChain that kind of emphasizes the real communication and storytelling, how would you say the interviews are different than maybe other types of FD interview roles?

[原文] [Steven Chu]: Yeah, I would say that you know, in our role, it's a very much we we test for communication and and technical ability. But I would say on the technical ability side, it's less about, you know, can you deconstruct a a problem you haven't seen before on the spot or, you know, a leak code type question, and more of I would say like project-based. So, can you go, you know, learn about our LangChain platform, LangSmith, our our commercial platform, and you know, weave a story around a we've a story or demonstration on how, you know, a company could could benefit by building on this platform. So naturally, that that takes into account your ability to, you know, learn frameworks and understand agent architecture at a high level, but then also, you know, tie that into the full agent development process, which often times is less

[原文] [Steven Chu]: At LangChain, there are really, I would say, two primary steps in our interview process. Both are a mix of technical and communication, which is a theme I'll mention multiple times. I'll start with the more case- or project-based interview. As I mentioned before, this is really about whether you can demonstrate the value of LangChain and LangSmith as if you were presenting to a real customer. This will usually involve some type of project around building a fictional agent and tying in everything from why LangChain is the best platform to build your agent to the iterative process of improving your agent and showing what that agent development life cycle looks like.
